Illustration Friday: Depth

Posted on | September 15, 2005 | 10 Comments

Too often, we pull ourselves apart, seeing in our reflections a mosaic of discontent. We compare ourselves, compete, yet the starting and the ending point for each is vastly different. More than skin deep, beauty is a thing of wonder, of words, of intellect. The grace we bring to our work, the courage, the mess of gratitude, of sorrow, of moments, fills each of us differently. Why do we learn then, to make these shallow comparisons? Media pressing up against us from all sides, blurs our own internal voice, making us loose track of real depth, where it’s found. In each of us, differently, wholly as we are.

Sadly, this is so true. Even tonight I grappled with my own problems of being hard on myself and never feeling enough, even for my family. I want/need to blur my inner voice actually, because it doesn’t say things that are good for me.

The media bombardment that people face dailyl is such propaganda, and it’s responsible for a multiple of sins regarding the way we think about ourselves and others. Kill your television! :D

Well put and powerfully illustrated. This piece makes an excellent next chapter to your “starting a different story” post. I love the finger paint feeling of your shapes, and the background text (which looks as if you burned the edges??). It’s a simple composition that contains a lot of subtext (no pun, really). I love your thoughtful and beautiful art!
