Illustration Friday: Escape

September 22nd, 2005 § 14

Fall is officially here today, on quiet feet like a cat. Flame colored leaves gathering in numbers on the trees; the sun setting earlier over the lake. During the day, intense heat still in the sun, shivers almost, in the shade. Pumpkins in the fields now are round full orange moons; the corn–higher than our heads.

I can’t believe we moved here 4 months ago. A long and lazy summer of watermelon, and farmer’s markets has slipped by. Bean is crawling now and I can run five miles without effort. DH mountain bikes regularly. This has been our escape–to move here. Such gratitude fills me when I contemplate the difference.

Lovely little sketch and I’m jealous — but at least my 5 miles is pain from my sciatic nerve, not from running!

Christina, this is just so beautiful…it captures the feeling of those sunsets that make you wonder how each new grogeous sunset still delights as if it were the first. I like the dark silhouetted trees along the edge of the water and the broad wash strokes you used to create sky and water.

I moved from Westchester county to northwestern CT a little more than two years ago. I had been traveling here every weekend for about four years, and it always felt like such an escape from the horror show Westschester had become…crowded, traffic, rude people, stress, stress, stress…etc. It really felt like the country here compared to the weekday madness I was leaving behind. Unfortunately, “progress” is catching up with me. Although this area still retains some of its rural feeling, the growth I’ve seen over these few years saddens me. We often talk about moving even farther away…

Your new life sounds idyllic. I know how it feels to make the comparison between the old and the new. I actually wrote a little bit about this here: http://anonyrrie.blogspot.com/2005/08/tree-frogs-and-chickens-and-bearsoh-my.html. I hope you continue to enjoy the joy!

Lovely, lovely! And sunsets, well they are what wonder is all about -

And I am a tad bit jealous, as it is still in the 90s in my home state, and you have PUMPKINS! Oh, our short bit of fall is not enough.

Love your blog, really really love it lots. Your Bean is precious.

Oooh, so pretty! Just gorgeous, makes you want to get lost in the golden sun with the swirls of water around you while swimming depper into the sunset. What a fantastic escape!!

I’d hang that one in my home and gaze at it on long days like today. (I’m home. YAY!) I’m in Hurricane Houston where it is currently like 97 degrees. I need to escape but can’t GET OUT OF THIS PLACE. I guess I’ll just have to gaze at your picture and dream…(grin)

This is why fall is the greatest of the seasons. We escape the nustle and bustle of summer and sink into creation as it lights up around us.

Sounds like things are going so well for you and your family. Congratulations. You deserve it.

Lovely watercolor. I can’t wait for fall to get here, too, but today it was 90 degrees. Ack.

This is wonderful. It makes me miss fall – we don’t get many changing colors here, we just don’t have the right combination of trees and temperatures. In the fall of 2002 R and I took a tour from Cape Cod to Arcadia and back, eating lobster and leaf-peeping. It was lovely; your painting reminds me of that trip.

Your paintings are SO ethereal and beautiful. I could just sit and stare, it’s like a window onto a more peaceful world.
