Plout eater

Posted on | October 6, 2005 | 18 Comments

As far as I can gather, plouts are a funky plum+apricot hybrid, and for some reason they are available in my local market–grown locally and organic. Bean loves them, and spends a delightful twenty minutes at a time sucking at the sweet, firm golden flesh.

CORRECTION: Plu-ot. See above post.

    Christina,

Sorry to hear things have been a bit topsy turvy of late. I’m a great believer in all things dave matthews, so i’m glad to see he and Mr. Bean eating a plout cheered you up a bit. If you’d like company in your hole-in-the-ground pity party, please let me know. I just whipped up a fantastic batch of ribollita and i’d be more than willing to share a bit of mine for some ice cream :)

He’s so cute munching on his pluot. Such beautiful eyes. Yes, pluots are everywhere here in California–and they’re good and travel well. There’s also another fruit that was recently ‘invented’, but the name of it is escaping me, that is a cross of a mango and an apricot… wacky, eh?

Plout is heaps better than plumcot. Repeat after me, plout, plout, PLOUT.

Holy Guacamole! A plout! And a cute kid! While I was at basic training, they had plouts, but I’ve never seen them after that. I thought is was just some experimental fruit the army was working on. Haha, I’m glad to see that they do exist elsewhere and I’ll be able to get them again eventually. : )

I just discovered the plout/pluot in my local grocery store today advertised as a plOUt. However, online dictionaries reveal it as a plUOt. I found this site while trying to lookup information about the fruit and noticed that some of your readers refer to it as a plout while others say pluot. Makes sense that there would be confusion since the grocery stores are even ambiguous. Pluot is 75% plum, 25% apricot. Plumcot is 50% plum, 50% apricot. They make plumcots by crossing a plum with an apricot and then make a pluot by crossing a plumcot with another plum. These fruits are relatively new, created in late 20th century so it’s no wonder that some have never heard of them. They aren’t plentiful in all local areas as of yet.
