Illustration Friaday: Cold

Posted on | October 19, 2005 | 18 Comments

It has rained here for two weeks straight, and the air has turned cold. I’ve almost grown used to indirect light of these grey days, and squinted yesterday when the afternoon the sun burst through.

We went running, wearing hats and fleece, and the light in the sky and on the lake was so beautiful it nearly took our breath away. The hills were red with turning maples, and in the light of the setting sun they were on fire. The clouds, backlit and dark. Leaves blowing in windy spirals.

We ran past the beach—where in summer throngs of people with beers and kids with plastic sandcastle buckets gathered around barbecue pits—and the picnic tables were upturned and stacked for winter in a heap. Along the path, sumac leaves the shape of spear tips, had turned to burnished gold. And in the sky above us, geese in long Vs moving south, kept calling out.

I couldn’t stop running: my lungs sucking in the cold air, feet falling evenly on the wet pavement. We ran past dark puddles where I could see leaves, sunken like yellow boats, below the surface. I couldn’t stop, because those glorious fleeting moments of late autumn sun and clouds, cold air meeting the heat of my cheeks, made me want to cry.

I grew up in upstate New York (the part near Canada, NOT Westchester…which is considered part of NYC to us true upstaters lol!) so I can also relate. That is part of the reason I moved to Delaware. Nary an inch of snow here the whole season. If they do get snow (and I do mean only an inch) they shut down completely. You can tell the PA and NY people because they are the only ones on the road.
Oh, thanks for letting me blab on your blog! ANYHOO! I wanted to tell you I like your illo a lot! Great job!!!

Can I come live where you do? My son is still wearing shorts to school. (I am NOT kidding.)

But, this morning, we actually had some pleasantly brisk air for our morning bike ride to school. I just wish it lasted past about 10 a.m. Sigh…

Beautiful rich colors and a texture that makes me want to touch it. Your painting plus the writing takes your fleeting moment and both brings it alive for others and saves it forever. Thank you.

That’s it. I’m getting out there for a visit. Just let me find that hidden batch of pretend money and I’ll see if I can’t turn it into the real stuff.

Autumn is so wonderful. It makes me want to cry, too. It’s so sad the year is ending, but so beautiful the way it goes out in a blaze of glory!

I’m truly enjoying the creeping in of Fall here in sunny Calif. It makes me realize that I’ve missed Fall the past several years… Lovely post and painting.

Your bold, paint-thick, textured strokes and the flying leaves in the foreground capture so completely that feeling of blustery autumn! There’s such a bittersweet feeling observing the tension between the vibrant colors of the leaves and the chill of the air. It’s a spectacular ending, but an ending nonetheless… You’ve conveyed this so eloquently in your painiting and your text. Your submissions are always so well worth the wait! Are you in CT now? Your locale and weather sound so much like mine.

Still running in shorts here in the Pacific Northwest, in spite of the rain… :) How large is your illustration? It’s so juicy!

It’s been sunny and in the high 80s all week long here. Too hot for me.

What a nice change to “feel” the weather where you are.

Although I know you’re sick of the rain!

there are so many moments in the winter when i think … remember when i could leave the house without bundling up? remember when my skin could touch the air without hurting? … and then i reassure myself that these days will come again and that first day when i can go out without a jacket … with bare arms … it’s such a celebration!
i love the seasons… they remind us what we should be doing. nature tells us … slow down… take care of yourself.
your post was lovely, thanks for sharing, mav

beautiful painting and beautiful words… you have such an observant eye. the changing of the seasons amaze me, how the earth changes and how we adapt and adjust to these changes.
