The pictures I promised

Go here for the up-close versions & lots of notes. I had maybe a little too much fun with the writing the notes.
And thank you for the suggestions. I currently smell a tad like sauteed cabbage, but my boobs don’t hurt as much… (Bean was down to one nursing a day–before bed, so it was a very gradual thing. Still. DH made some comment about bra/boobs being a “garden of eatin’ ” tonight. Let’s just say I’m eager for this particular phase to be over. HOWEVER, Bean has been remarkable–sleeping–for the first time ever–all the way through the night, in his crib, willingly… they say when they’re ready, they’re ready. I guess he was ready.)
Also, we’re going to Florida next week to hang out with my best friend. It will be Bean’s first time on a plane. DH & I are virgins in the air travel with a small child department. More help please. What should I bring/do/be prepared for?
And now a quick recap of house progress: Every single room is full of boxes. My god, where did we manage to accumulate so much stuff? But the kitchen, oh it’s so lovely. It begs to be used. So I have been. Grilled tuna stakes with couscous salad, banana muffins, soup… And I’ve been slowly, so very slowly, unpacking all the rest of the house too. Rediscovering artwork that’s been packed for over a year, and precious vases, soft velvet pillows, and letters from old friends. But in between there is still the stress of feeling constantly addled: I cannot find anything, ever, when I need it. It’s kindof making me nuts.
But then I go outside and sit in the sunshine and take pictures of bugs and play peekaboo with Bean, or walk in late evening with DH hand in hand through waist high grass watching the bats swoop over head, and it’s all worth it. All of it.

of course you know I am not a mama, but just make sure he is eating or drinking take off and landing, also if you might try getting him used to ear plugs the wax kind and using those, the ears will be the worst but it should be okay. Have fun and call me some day!!

OH MY GOD, Christina, it’s gorgeous! Seriously. What a safe-haven you and DH have created. I’m insanely jealous of your kitchen and your dishwasher!!! Ours didn’t end up going into the final plans…but I think we’ll live. Kudos to you and your sweetie for all the hard work and long hours put in. Can’t wait to see more photos as you get settled.

Christina,
The house seems so very…you. Overall, it seems to be a beautiful piece of property with lots of room for exploration and growth (both for you and Bean). The house itself is absolutely beautiful inside. You and DH should be so proud of yourselves for the long hours and the love that you put into the house. It has such beautiful bones now.
Best of luck with everything. Take it slow and remember… you’re there to stay and you have allllll summer to unpack.

Your home is beautiful and I covet your farm sink…well, I covet the whole kitchen really.
For flying (aren’t I just the wealth of advice?) I always bring a box of crayons and paper, that always presents a good time. Books are good and I always buy a toy or 2 (we fly to California so we need a lot of props!) that she never sees until the plane and that holds her as well. Snacks of course are always a plus.

I’ve been away on my own plane trips house hunting by myself with a one year old. First off, congratulations!! The pictures are lovely!! I can’t wait until we are settled and out of all of this moving phase.
About the flying – crayola makes those great color wonder coloring books and markers that only write on the paper, but not anything else. Great for the plane!! You don’t have to worry about him getting it all over everything. Also, I brought LOTS of snacks – finger foods – baby goldfish, animal crackers, those freeze dried fruits – anything that is not sticky and won’t need a spoon. Bring more than you think you will need (including juice). I don’t know if you have a layover, but I did and I thanked the stars that I had brought enough because my first plane was late and I barely made it to the second and I didn’t have enough time to get Porter a real lunch. And one more thing – lollypops. I would never at any other time do this because of the whole sugar thing, but at one point his ears were hurting so bad on landing that I couldn’t get him to drink or eat a thing – it was HORRIBLE – he just writhed and screamed. A lady in front of me with a little one handed me a lollypop and it worked. As I found out, all rules go out the window during air travel. Oh, and any of his favorite books to look through. It seems like a lot, but they were all REALLY necessary. Good luck. Enjoy FL.

My girlfriend travelled a lot when her daughter was a toddler. She had a small soft backpack filled with small toys – the best part was each toy was actually tied/attached to the backpack with ribbon or string or something – no toy retrieval from a tight airplane seat. She also had masking tape with her – quiet and very entertaining for a young child. Good Luck with your first flight with a toddler.

Your house looks wonderful! Definitely worth all of that effort.
I have travelled four times with two babies to from Australia to the US and once from Australia to the UK and I have to say there is NOTHING you can bring that will occupy them for the amount of time they need occupying. But lots of books, paper to scribble on, snacks, and Lego blocks or similar, seem to help. Good luck!!
