To hold the moon…

July 31st, 2007 § 10

We were driving home the other night and the moon was following us, the way the moon does. Playing peekaboo, a late summer moon like a milky porcelain saucer tangled between the branches of leaf-heavy trees and slumbering buildings.

Bean was nearly breathless, “It’s so bea-u-ti-ful!” he exclaimed.

And then, “I want to hold the moon, mama!” His voice full with urgent longing.

Porter is fascinated with the moon, also. He always wants to see it before bed, and gets quite upset when it is not out, or covered by clouds. There is a great kid’s song by Laurie Berkner called “Moon Moon Moon” that we sing before bed.

I think it’s wonderful that even at such a young age, Bean can see beauty in things around him.

As our kids cross the deck each night to their room they holler, “GOODNIGHT, MOON!” at the top of their lungs. It’s a rocking tradition and the moon is a big ol’ celebrity round these parts.

    Love the piece!

    Goodnight, moon.

I loved watching the moon on road trips… So sweet.

I just wondered what it was as I scrolled down. The magic of it, the simplicity in the explanation. With all our electricity on half the night, we fail to notice the night sky. Last night the moon was hiding behind clouds and the glimmer of light was beautiful.
