Big questions, small boy

Posted on | November 30, 2008 | 14 Comments

Will the sun burn out?
What about when we die, will it burn out then?
Will our truck and our house still be here when we die?
Is Rudolf real?
Is there someone inside the computer that makes it do what you want it to do?
How did the baby get inside your tummy?

***
Anyone have any ideas how to answer the last one in particular? I told him I’d get back to him tomorrow…

My sister told her kids that a seed from the daddy combined with a seed from the mommy to create a baby that has to grow in the mommy until it’s big enough to live on its own. Her son seemed satisfied with that but then a few days later wanted to know how they get the baby out. :)

We told Porter that daddy gave me a present full of love and it made a baby inside my tummy. Then when it was time for her to come out, I went to the hospital and the doctors took her out of me. He seems okay with it right now. He asked how they took her out – I told him that there is a special door that opens that helps the doctor get her out.

Hehe… no idea, haven’t been asked that one yet. But I’m looking forward to hearing how your conversation with Bean goes!

that was something to laugh about when I was sick. Sorry sis, but I would say go with a version of the truth if you can.

i went with an approximation of the truth. (=

when my girl asked at your boy’s age, i told her it was a little bit of daddy and a little bit of me and the result was magic. i didn’t feel like it was a lie, it is magic making a baby and that was enough for her. (=

“First the doctor used a long needle to harvest mommy’s eggs. Then the lab tech put each egg in a petri dish and inserted one of daddy’s sperm into each egg. Then he waited to see if they joined. Once he know they had joined the doctor used a catheter to transfer one of these fertilized eggs into mommy. That’s where you came from. The rest were frozen to use later. That’s where your brother came from.”

I like the question about the truck being around after you die. So sweet.

my 4 year old just asked me “if i had to buy a bag of bones”
to make him and “how did i get in your belly”

    my reply was…
you were a seed of love! that the seed grew in mommy’s belly and got help from daddy and that your bones were in the seed!

whew, these questions blind side you don’t they…

my younger child said at the same time…
mommy, i need a “piece of quiet” i liked that one.

i need a piece of quiet right now.

    have a beautiful day~

We had a conversation about the sun burning out the other night, looking at the stars after a ‘smores roast…

I heart Bean (as always) and his questions. (Will we ever get to the talking? I know we will, but it feels so far away!) I would say that a little bit of truth and fairytale go a long way…just as much as he needs to know.

I love Google. We figured that it is best to tell the little guy the right answer. He does repeat it and does sound too young for some facts of life. When we asked “Where does the Sun go when it gets dark?” I showed him the Day & Night Map http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/sunearth.html and he loved it. Now he knows that when it is night for us, the Sun is waking up his grandparents in India.

When he asked how the baby got in my tummy, we said a little bit of mommy and daddy, makes a baby. And then, he asked how the “baby will be born” and that information he relayed to another kid in day care–the other kid was flabbergasted and shocked and the teacher told him to talk to his parents! TMI

Rudolf is real, just as Santa is. And now he is learning about Jesus. Amazing what they ask and how difficult it is for us to explain what we just take for granted.

i still haven’t told my 7 and 8 year old girls how that happens yet. i am scared to lOL!
i did hear there are some good books at the Christian book stores, if you wanted to go that route, that have versions for the younger child and then different versions for each age appropriate?

Darn, I don’t have my bookmarks here just now, else I could have pointed you to a real sweet site… Hmm, ok, tell you what. I will do a post today (latest tomorrow, I promise) and you can check it up there :) (Rubbing my hands in glee – aha, a captive reader! Also, at last one reason to get off my ass and post afresh!)
