Not catching any breaks

Posted on | April 10, 2009 | 19 Comments

So, Bean seemed to doing better-ish. No fever, and a happy grin on his face. Then this morning he came into our room and was busy building a fort on our bed with his trains while DH showered and Sprout and I dozed nose to nose, and then suddenly he threw up. All. Over. Everything.

And, um? I am so not okay with vomit. I know many mothers who say that it’s different when it’s their kid. But it isn’t different for me. Vomit is vomit and it makes me want to vomit. Profound, right?

The only good thing to come from this morning was watching DH gently scoop Bean, shower him, and wrap him in towels. Thank god there are two of us, because the vomit doesn’t make him queasy the way it does me, and he was a rock all morning. Gentle, funny, and comforting.

But really? When will the plague pass us by? Enough already.

On a completely different note, I have begun to bake bread and I am wondering if you have a favorite tried and true bread recipe to share?

Oh my goodness—I’d lose it, too. I’m literally phobic of vomit. Poor you, and poor Bean, obviously.

I don’t have a bread recipe to share, but if you find a good one, will you post or share? It’s on my list of things to bake, and I’ve never done it before.

Hope everyone is back to normal soon. Take good care.

I’m sending you a huge web hug. Really, I know how it feels. And speaking of bread, could you email me your post address – I have something I’d like to send you.

Try reading artisan bread in 5 mins a day if you want to bake frequently. However, the recipe I keep returning to is

    Turns out perfect every time.

i’m with you on vomit, there’s nothing that brings on the gag reflex for me.

I fourth the comments on the vomit. Eeeeew.

As for bread, I’ve found that the “Perfect White Bread” in the Betty Crocker Cook Book is AWESOME. I’ve tried the cinnamon bread recipe, but always burn it. I think it’s the sugar in the cinnamon sugar swirl in that one.

Haha! Mine vomits on demand! He has the most sensitive gag reflex of anyone I know! I quickly got over the vomit-phobia. I hope he does better soon. I am aching for the warmth to come and soothe my poor boy’s lungs.

I really want to learn to bake bread. I tried a recipe on some website I found once and it turned out really, uh, strange is the only word I can think of – like it fell flat – weird. If you get any recipes that you like forward them to me and maybe I can try them. I made some delicious buttermilk fan rolls from Gourmet Magazine – those came out fabulous!

My husband makes wonderful bread – we never eat storebought anymore. The recipe was in the NYT a few years ago, there’s a self-important article about it, and then the recipe at the end.

It really is delicious bread and it’s super easy to make.

(Good luck with the sick baby – spring is almost here . . .)

the no-knead bread recipe listed on the Bread and Honey blog is FABULOUS! And super easy. I make a buttermilk bread that i’ll list on my blog soon, as well as a beer-chocolate-cherry bread that simply rocks. Happy baking! My kids have been gone all week and some crazy nurturing mama self in me has been inspired to bake bread like a crazy woman. Go figure.

OMG how I feel for you. I couldn’t have had children if I hadn’t had Anders. I can deal with everything that comes out of the bottom half of the kids, which he had a hard time with, but HE could deal with everything that comes out of the top half: AAAGH. Infinitely worse, in my book.

Also, re-reading my comment just made me laugh like an idiot, because OF COURSE I couldn’t have had children if I hadn’t had Anders, but you know what I mean, I hope. :D

I love the bread recipes by Jamie Oliver. Often make his courgette and cheese bread as well as the chickpea and paprika one. Am making sundried tomato and red onion foccacia today. Fingers crossed that it will turn out well.

Sending prayers for a fast recovery for Bean.

I have made this bread two times in the last two weeks and it tastes delicious! It was the nicest yeast dough ever to knead – so soft and delicious. The dough for the second loaf I made was a bit on the sticky side plus I proofed(?) it a bit too long – it was nicer the first time but still declicous. Here’s the link:

Hey… the flu… yes. We had it last week, on our vacation. In California. Ahhh. So sorry to hear about all of the sickness and worry. I hope that the hell you have gone through this year gives Bean the immune system that ROCKS next year!

All of the talk about bread is making me want some. My husband is the baker…I think I will put in a request. Hope you all have a happy Easter.

I’ve been on a bread-making kick the last few weekends. First, I made a buttermilk quick bread from Eating Well magazine — quick as promised and tasty. Good to accompany something hearty like a chili or stew. And then I advanced to a yeast bread, and went with the Joy of Cooking’s milk bread. Delicious! And everything went as promised in the directions, which was great for a novice bread-maker like me.
