A list happy inventory

Posted on | May 21, 2009 | 18 Comments

In January for my birthday, inspired as always by Andrea’s awesome lists, I wrote my own: 32 things to do before I turn 32. But then I forgot to post it, until now, when I was cleaning up the post-its on my desktop (how I love the post-it widget!) and found the list again. I was surprised by how many things I’ve already done, or started to do. Something about putting stuff on the page makes it happen. And I love that.

I’m thinking that maybe as I accomplish things on my list I’ll post about it & link to the list in my sidebar. Aside from the sheer glee of writing them, nothing beats crossing stuff off lists. You too should make your very own list. I would LOVE it if you shared. Here in the comments. Or share the link to your list on your blog.

The thing about making a relatively long list of things to be completed in a relatively short time (a year) is that you have to really think about your life realistically. What do you really want to do this year? What do you want to accomplish? What are some of the small things that you have been meaning to do, that will likely get pushed to the side by bigger more consuming (and not necessarily on the list!) things unless you write them down?

I love your list. Some of the things have been on my mental list for a while too (Fame and hang family pictures et al.) My New Year’s resolution was to CUT the CLUTTER and invite friends to dinner once a month. I am still on the CLUTTER part. My mom kept a home like the pages of Architectural Digest, it was (and still is) immaculate. My house, not so much. I need to get over the perfection thing, but I do need to have it right to start. It is close, but life is busy now. Once school ends I can get it done and my first dinner will be scheduled!

You’re always such an inspiration. I shall ponder putting a list together and see what I can come up with. I have to-do lists all over the place. Maybe it’s time to consolidate them in 1 place.

I love your list! So many things on it are outside, offline and active and it really is inspiring.

    I’m with Liz…off pondering.

I found a notebook recently in which I wrote every day a short list of things I really really wanted. It was a little notebook; I kept it for about a month writing a list of five to ten things every day. As the days passed the things became less weighty – I want to learn how to wear make-up made the list – but reading it over again a year later I was struck by how many of the things – ranging from getting that professional make-up lesson to publishing my poetry – I’d actually done. I wrote about it in this post

and I’d make that link prettier but I’m still negotiating my brand! new! MacBook! and can’t find a lot of my old tried and true shortcuts.

I’m doing that this year, and it’s been a long-lasting thrill. I’ll post the results on my next birthday (July 19th), and you’re absolutely right — putting them down on paper works a certain kind of magic toward making them happen. I’m looking forward to seeing what you get crossed off!

I love your list, too! The best part is that many of them are things that I have wanted to do or just did recently. I wish you the best of luck on your accomplishments! Keep us posted.

I have a list on my blog, though it is in need of an update.

Guess what. I was out having coffee and stopped by the newsagency to look at magazines. I picked up the New Yorker ($12 here!) and thought about how i would love to read it every week. I am going to see how much it costs to subscribe in Australia.

Oh, you look beautiful in that photo!

You made me realize I haven’t done my list for the year! This is the first year I’ve missed in a while, dang, I better get on that.

I love your list and just decided to try my own. Then I realized I will turn 26 this July (this seems surprisingly old to me – not as in “old old”, but as in – “have I somehow missed out on the last year old”) and might not end up happy with a 26 before 26 list. So maybe … I’ll turn it into a 26 before 2010. Holy cow! 2010! How could this happen? I need to get back into the moment. Where have I been …

i love lists and even more, reading what someone else has listed!

i have a 101 things in 1001 days list that started off very grandiose. once i read it through and realized that it won’t be possible to travel on the orient express before 2010, i refined and now it’s a fun, do-able list of inspiration.

very pretty photo of you – your hair looks really good long.

My list pales in comparison to the creativity found within yours and the lovely Andrea’s, but I will hesitantly share mine with you.

I will be 32 in the fall and haven’t acoomplished as many as I would like yet. But I’m getting there.

Love your self-portrait. You are beautiful and talented!

I have a list of things to do before I’m 30. One of them includes buying a house, and several depend on one another. I’m happy to say that a few have been crossed off, just since I wrote them down about 5 months ago. I live by the lists..
