A new look.
Posted on | August 3, 2009 | 60 Comments

Hi. It’s about time for a new look around here.
In the process, I seem to have lost a post, but no big deal. It’s Monday and its sunny which are two things I generally really love, except last night Sprout woke up at 4am and pretty much didn’t go back to sleep the rest of the night/morning. And how I count on those two hours. Oh man. It will certainly be a two latte day.
Now that things are fresh and clean around here, I want to share some links I’ve found lately that I’ve been enjoying.
Firstly, Tait Simpsons’s photographs. They are full of line and texture and mood. Also Sophik’s dreamy summer photos. Especially this one. I’ve always had a soft spot for old trucks. These portraits by Mikael Kennedy also grabbed me. They are haunting and memorable and somehow almost secretive, like you’re there in the room, but no one knows.
Also, a little music. I’m listening to this over and over again. It’s in a story I’m working on, and the more I listen the more I love it. Gould was a fascinating, remarkable, devastating musician. Speaking of music, have you heard this? If not, you are in for a treat. It’s the kind of mixed up soundtrack that makes sense to me. That music is like what stories do in my head: one talking to another until they become part of another story together.
So. Hi. What are your plans for August? I’ll tell you mine, if you tell me yours. I want this month to be outstanding. It’s the last month of summer. The month when all the insects start singing in the grass and the blackberries get ripe. Its the month for doing big things.
So I’ll admit. I have an embarrassingly enormous writing goal for August. I had a story blindside me the other day, and it won’t let go. It’s as far away from anything I’m comfortable writing as I’ve ever been, and yet it’s good and the exciting and the characters just keep whispering in my ears. It’s all rather discombobulating, as I was right in the middle of my book project, and I have more than one short story on the stove too right now. But it wont leave and is demanding to be written, so I am.
I decided to do my own little August version of NaNoWriMo. Ha. Did I just say little? Not so much really. I am aiming to have about 80,000 words by the end of the month. I know, right? Crazy. I can’t help it though. The story must. be. written. And I figure if I write about it here it will be just one more reason to do it.
Also, I am really interested to see how I respond to such concrete writing goals and completely new material. The stuff I’ve been working on for other book is so different. I have so much material already there that I am constantly tripping myself up with ambivalence and indecision. That story is close to my heart and I love it, but it is a pain in the ass. Kind of like another child.
The new story, though, this hit-me-upside-the-head story is more like someone I have a crush on. I am obsessed. I want to do nothing but sit down and listen to the characters as they chatter amongst themselves. My fingers ache at night from typing, and there is no way, no way at all I can type fast enough to get everything down it seems. And I like it like that. And I am interested to see what happens if I go for it, all out, no hold barred, no excuses.
See, the thing is, I respond well to goals and deadlines whether I want to admit it or not. And I also respond well to doing things in little bite sized manageable pieces. Like the 30 Day Shred, or running 3 miles, committing to 2500 words a night seems like a concrete and small enough goal that it will actually get me somewhere. Like in the neighborhood of an entire novel by the end of this month.
Right, so, off the deep end I go. Tra la la.
What are you up to this month? What thing do you really want to do in that quiet secret compartment in your heart? I dare you. I dare you to do it every day. For the whole month.
(PS-Because I’m into doing things big this month, I am declaring it an unofficial delurking day. Please say hi. Your comments are one of my favorite things in the world.)

Love the new look! I also want to do big things in August. Living in Minnesota, summer are the coveted months, and so I want to get out and enjoy the last few weeks of warmth. Good luck on your goals! Sounds like fun.
August 3rd, 2009 @ 7:37 pm
August is the last blast of the blow torch for us here in Memphis. It’s a time to nap and dream of what we will do with all those tomatoes, okra, eggplants and zucchini tumbling in from the garden. Movement is slow in August. Te heat is oppressive. It’s a thinking time of sparse action.
I think I will be getting well for the first time this year. (Third time? It’s all in the counting…) I will paint every day and play with dogs and cook extraordinary dishes from humble ingredients.
And drink cold bourbon and coke under the shade of the wisteria.
August 3rd, 2009 @ 8:06 pm
adore the new look! and also baking cupcakes as I see you are enjoying on the side bar. those are some lofty goals, but I am sure you can get there and further in the last bits of Summer.
August 3rd, 2009 @ 8:14 pm
I hardly count as a delurker, as I have commented often. And steal all your ideas.
My goal for each day of August is to not forget to look up into my tree in the backyard. I love that tree and have to remember to appreciate it while it still has leaves.
And I like your clean look!
August 3rd, 2009 @ 8:22 pm
Loving the new look. Your blog inspires me in such an intense way. I love it!
August 3rd, 2009 @ 8:51 pm
Big things in august. I like it!
The new site is great. Clean and simple.
August 3rd, 2009 @ 8:54 pm
It’s official – I have to start exercising. My brother’s wedding is in October and Mama has a dress to fit into.
I want to set writing goals, but I don’t even know where to begin. I don’t know if I should start writing morning pages again or WHAT. Perhaps something will come to me. But I love the clean new look here and am picturing your many books on my shelves…no, they will be super precious, they’ll definitely be bedside table books for sure.
August 3rd, 2009 @ 10:22 pm
delurking.
i look forward to each new post and your pretty pretty words. today’s post made me envious. i wish i had a story knock knock knockin’ at my brain’s door. i wish for that to be my goal this month. to have a story come up and grab me from behind and not let go. beautiful site you have here
August 3rd, 2009 @ 11:34 pm
Hi Sister,
I’d posted a huge comment. Then fate came in and erased it… Love you, love the new look. Summer is going by too fast. We’ll have to plan a get together at some point this fall…
We had a most amazing evening last week and I thought of you–a quiet and hot evening, some friends, five furry black creatures in lifejackets, a canoe, a warm lake at sunset, the smell of a charcoal grill. The moon rose over the lake with our laughter echoing in the ripples like the moonbeams. The dogs, quiet finally, rode peacefully balanced in the midsection of the canoe all the way back to the car… It would have been fun to have you there…
Call sometime. I will too.
xxoo,

I’m a lurker from way back.
but i still come around quite often and peek into your life. my blog has pretty much fallen by the wayside as i spend more time on other media.
August 4th, 2009 @ 12:18 am
i am very much enjoying the new look. with summer vacation coming to an end i set a goal every day that i want to accomplish. today it was to hang five shelves and a floating shelf. i think tomorrow is to paint a bookshelf. for the rest of the month: get my husbands stuff moved out the back bed room, paint it, get it ready for our baby, and get ready for the start of a new school year!
August 4th, 2009 @ 1:33 am
You did lose a post–the one with all the moment by moment pictures of the day. I loved those pictures, and all the comments people left in response!
I like being pushed to think big. Thanks! Am thinking of going out there with my own work on my blog, taking a few more risks as I think about my next steps (so check back there!). August is a pretty big month for us already–moving out of our house, moving to Spain for a year, a sister’s wedding, finding a sublet in Barcelona, starting my study–basically embarking on a last year of travel and adventure before settling down for a while with children keeping us closer to home.
I’m really goal oriented myself….it’s a reminder to make goals about things I care about. I heard someone once say they kept a list of 100 things they wanted to do in their life, and looked at it once a week. Ten might be a nice start.
Great new look!
August 4th, 2009 @ 1:37 am
Happy August!
It is the last month of peace before temporary work insanity for me. Hubby and I aspire to BBQ on the deck everyday, and do some strength bias Crossfit training to get in kick-A@# shape before soccer season starts in September.

Hi there…
It’s time for me to admit I’ve been reading from afar for a while now… I am so inspired by your photos and your words. I’ve been reconnecting with photography lately and loving my camera and what can come out of it.
Love the new look and feel the impetus for setting up new forms of artistic expression for myself. Matt and I are moving to Seattle in two months, the perfect time to clean the house, rearrange, and move forward into the unknown.
Love to you…
August 4th, 2009 @ 2:28 am
I just found your site today, so I’m happy to delurk. I love a challenge, and I think August is the perfect time for one.
August 4th, 2009 @ 2:43 am
What a lovely goal.. I am sure your novel will be as beautiful and inspiring as your blog (which I adore)… I have some little goals for the last 5 weeks of my summer vacation (I am a K teacher.) They include visiting my Granny, learning to make a delicious pear martini, reading 10 books, scrapbooking 40 pages, having more company over for dinner and working out daily… among other things.
August 4th, 2009 @ 2:50 am
I’m inspired by your rush of words and ideas. Sounds like you’re really storming through writing these days – it’s so good to hear that.
August 4th, 2009 @ 3:32 am
Love the look!! I remember what a big deal August used to be to me when I lived in NY (Western–near Buffalo). The Erie County Fair mid-August signaled the end of Summer. Chiavetta’s chicken & salt water taffy–Fair treats! Since I moved to Florida 7 years ago (near Clearwater) I CAN’T WAIT to be done with July…and August…and September…and October! It’s been between 93 and 99 degrees here E-V-E-R-Y day. It’s 11:15 pm now & it’s still 83 degrees. I also work very well under pressure–sometimes that’s all that will work. Thanks for your challenge–I take it personally & appreciate it. In August I will commit to my stretching protocol (neck injury) every day, I will contact the client prospects I’ve been afraid to call again, I will SOLVE my work dilemma, and I will remember how grateful I am for my children-how deeply I love them-how wondrous they are. This has been such a challenge for me lately–they are at such different places (3 1/2 years and 15 months. My husband & I (married 11 years)are also at different places. THAT difficulty is overwhelming & overshadowing my relationship with our sons. I’m stressed because of him & look at my boys through stress-colored glasses. (Thank you for letting me say all that.) I will recognize that every day & actively see the good in each situation with my boys. And…by the way…not to seem begrudging your got-it-togetherness…how IN THE HECK do you get so much done in a day???? Basically…I take care of the kids, play with them, cook, clean up–BOOM–end of day. Don’t get any of “my” things done…ever. Good for you. Maybe I will, too, when I grow up & get my life together–I’m 44.
August 4th, 2009 @ 4:08 am
I love your new look. I just wanted to tell you I so I want to read your book. So don’t give up I know that your dream will come true.
August 4th, 2009 @ 6:32 am
delurking…as requested. I love reading about your daily life as it seems so different than mine. Having a life with some small people and one special big person to share it with are my entire heart’s desire. so, please keep up the blogging and writing.
August 4th, 2009 @ 8:18 am
I love the new look! And I love fresh peas! YUM!
Your “voice” sounds so positive, so excited. I am so happy to hear it like this. Are you going back to work this fall, or staying with Sprout? Just curious.
Porter starts pre-k Aug 17. So I hope to enjoy everyday with him before he is a big boy in school everyday. It is only a half day, but a big deal for me to have him away from me everyday.
August 4th, 2009 @ 1:06 pm
I found you through a link someone posted in the comments of All & Sundry. So glad I clicked. Your writing is amazing. What I want to do in August is workout everyday (just got back into a fitness cycle after surgery). So far, so good.
August 4th, 2009 @ 1:16 pm
Jamie–I think I may skip the whole “clean” part of the business. My floor needs vacuuming, and guess what? I’m not going to do it because Sprout is asleep and I’m about to launch into writing. The floor will still be there, I’ve concluded. And it will get dirty again..
And Willow–I KNOW, I was bummed about that post, but in the shift it got eaten by the internet. Bummer. I’ll do another live blogging stint this week. Maybe it will become a tradition?
I love how many of you are saying hello (Hi Jenessa! So fun you found me here) and I love reading about all your august plans…
August 4th, 2009 @ 1:22 pm
love your new look. love your beautiful words. i’m saying hi. please keep writing because i enjoy reading! happy day.
August 4th, 2009 @ 1:47 pm
In honor of delurking day – hi! I found your blog awhile ago and always savor your posts and photos. It’s both comforting and inspiring for me to read about someone else who’s attempting to find the balance in home vs wandering, family vs self, etc etc. So thanks for sharing your journey, and doing it so well.
This August I want to finish the novel I’ve been working on periodically for the last ten years. Every time I’ve gotten momentum on it, real life has blindsided me with some crisis and I’ve had to set my book aside while I focus on the people in my life who need me. Then life will give me a breather and I go back to my book and start a whole new draft because of course my perspective has changed in the interim.
I’ve done four drafts that way and I think this last one is The One. It’s the first time I can read my book and genuinely think it’s good. I have only about 10,000 words to go but now I’m stuck. So this month I am going to get unstuck, write the ending, and edit the whole thing so it’s ready for submission to agents by Labor Day. So I’m cheering you on with your own personal Nano goal. Go for it!
Your post today reminds me of the Neko Case song that goes:
Magpie comes a-callin’, drops a marble from the sky
Tin roof sounds alarming, wake up child
Let this be a warning says the magpie to the morning
Don’t let this fading summer pass you by
Don’t let this fading summer pass you by
August 4th, 2009 @ 1:53 pm
Delurking to say Hi and love the new look. Can’t wait to read more this month!
a.
August 4th, 2009 @ 3:22 pm
Hi! You know me, I am always leaving you comments!
I think it’s great that you respond so well to deadlines and challenges. I do too because I am a huge procrastinator, but I do much better when the challenge is given to me by someone other than myself.
I think it’s great that you are being so drawn to this one story! it’s going to be a good one then when writing it comes that easily!
My month of August is CRAZY! We have company in town 3 different times! My brother comes Aug 15-22nd, then my friend August 23-24, then another friend Aug 26-29. Lots to do to get the house organized and cleaned thoroughly. In between all that, the girls are playing lots of dolls, and scrapbooking with me, going to parks and walks and just hanging out….
happy august!

I’ve been following your blog since almost the beginning. Surprises me, since I am 58 and a grandmother…but I think what I read from you is what I wish I had been.

ha. you caught me lurking. i love this post it’s so filled with renewed energy. isn’t it lovely to think that you can start over whenever you want? i love how you make lists, darling I think there is a bit of planner in you too. always more lists, more things to do, more post-it notes filled with dreams and hopes and chores.
there is something in the air this month…i feel it too that incredible need to create, produce, write, work. everywhere i go i can smell it, like those cinnabon places at the mall.
my plans for august…lets see: finish wedding planning, lay a tile floor/put up walls in the bathroom, get back to yoga/climbing, go to 10 workshops, and complete a online course, and…oh yes, sleep!
August 4th, 2009 @ 9:22 pm
Hi! Also delurking here. I love your blog, and when I read Scamp admit her age, I felt emboldened to write and say that I agree with her. I’m not a grandmother yet, but I love journeying back to the intense feelings of motherhood. You are so eloquent with your words and images. Thank you.

Well, hello there. How lovely to read about your creative process. How inspiring. and thank you for your sweet comments on my photography. xx Jen
August 5th, 2009 @ 12:28 am
Looong time lurker here… It’s about time I step up and let you know how inspired I am by your words and dreams. My children are 10, 13, and 14 and you are sooo much more on the ball than I ever was (or am for that matter.) Thanks for the challenge to make every day and moment count. I’ll certainly try to comment more often, as yours is truly one of the first blogs I visit on a daily basis. Congratulations on the story idea… what a gift!
August 5th, 2009 @ 1:24 am
I love this new look. I can’t share my plans for August just yet…:)
August 5th, 2009 @ 3:11 am
Clean and fresh, I like it.
I’ve been following for a few years. Your writing inspires me to write which is ultimately I think what brings me back over and over.
the adorable faces of your children now and then don’t hurt either;)
August I enter a new year in this decade that I’m enjoying immensely. I’m not entirely sure my goals are strictly to August but I want to have my photography portfolio at least started…and stop throwing out photo after photo. I would also like to finish a short story or at least wean down the character sketches into one cohesive bunch. we’ll see though. we’ll see.
August 5th, 2009 @ 4:12 am
Love the new look! I’m inspired by your writing goals to set up some art goals this month. So thanks!
August 5th, 2009 @ 9:29 am
How can u do that?
My two characters have been sitting on the same bench since the beginning of last month. I can not find the time or mood to take them a step forward. Most days, I feel so exhausted from work and all I want to do is just laying down with a good book.
I admire you.
August 5th, 2009 @ 1:29 pm
Delurking in Charlottesville, Virginia. I love your writing. I have a scribbled list of loved sentences, quotes, poetry… Kerouac, Hemingway, Anne Sexton, etc… and you are there too … “I couldn’t help the feeling in my chest: like a hundred silver minnows all darting at once this way and then that.”
Anyway, plans for August… I kicked it off with a trip to the river and then the county fair. Looking forward to peach picking, outdoor concerts, a white cotton dress, polo at a local vineyard, evening walks with friends, corn on the cob with butter and old bay, stubby white candles flickering inside a cluster of mason jars, a road trip to Kentucky to surprise my parents for my dad’s 6oth birthday, backyard movie night, swimming with my black lab Mabel and (fingers crossed) a healed foot that will allow me to return to running and yoga.
August 5th, 2009 @ 5:07 pm
I am not delurking because I am new so what does that me newlurking? Hmm. I have been looking for good Blog writing and saw a link to you on All & Sundry.
This month I have decided to be inspired to write better “stuff” on my blog. Write the way I think… try harder to turn my dreamy thoughts into actual words which will eventuall be turned into writing and maybe try to turn a passion into a dream. And a dream into some money. All this will not be accomplished in August but it will be started so I guess that is pretty big!
I will also start running in August. Mostly because I have to. I signed up to run a 5k race at the end of September and unless I want to keel over after mile 1 I better get to it.
Lovely blog, photos and writing!
August 5th, 2009 @ 6:04 pm
Love the new look.
Love your honest writing.
Per your instructions I am now de-lurked.
Keep up the great work. xo
August 5th, 2009 @ 6:34 pm
August will include taking a step back, relaxing, enjoying my last weeks of pregnancy, and getting ready for our new (first) arrival in September.
August 5th, 2009 @ 9:17 pm
August is the wrap up month for field work, the frantic month of making sure all of the data is collected, the bits, the parts, everything sorted and cleaned and reports written. It is saying goodbye to field hands who were here all too briefly. It is the last minute re-organization of details before the end of the fiscal year freezes the accounts and anything that hasn’t been accounted for falls into the void. It is the last month of the three month crazy jump around time. It means still stretching to spend time with the people I care about – finding and making time for running, biking and personal things despite the fact that I am not in the same place for more then two days and there is not always a path below my feet. And it is the harvest time, time when darkness returns to our Alaskan skies and with knowledge of winter on our heels we pick, fish, hunt, harvest, and prepare for storage.
August 5th, 2009 @ 9:54 pm
I’m just off to bed, having had a Weetabix to quiet the bit of hunger that may have kept me awake, but I can’t ignore the call to delurk. I comment from time to time, but I think more often than not I’ve so enjoyed the stories of your day that I’m at a loss to know what to add.
August 5th, 2009 @ 10:38 pm
Your excitement is contagious. I love it when a story begs to be written.I’ve been working away at whittling myself into the shape of how I used to be. And you know what, I’m succeeding. It feels great.
I plan on sewing all month and catching up on projects in my box. I’m happy with the business of it all and the fact that I feel like creating again.
August 5th, 2009 @ 10:51 pm
awesome new look. Back to basics. So simple and clean.
If you would like a random anyone to read your writing (beyond this blog, of course) I’m up for it. Drop me a line.
August 5th, 2009 @ 11:54 pm
I’ve delurked before…but I’ll do it again! Big month for my family for August…
- Just went to a Dave Matthews Band show last night with my husband (we love live music, have seen DMB over 20 times…but not in recent years)…and without the 5 year old. Crazy fun evening of dancing, dancing, dancing (and oogling over Dave).
- Cousin/sibling/parental long weekend coming up…nothing but swimming, hiking, and family fun.
- Heading to Vancouver and Whistler, BC late next week – for a week. Hub has a conference…so the 5 year old and I are flying out across the country to meet him there. Our plans are to relax, hike, hike, eat, explore, relax, mountain bike, relax.
- Continuing light training for a trail half marathon that will be in September.
- Mountain biking/camping with kids/friends at the end of the month.
Love your new look…
August 6th, 2009 @ 1:14 am
No, I wasn’t really thinking BIG for August, but now I am. Think think think, I’m thinking. What are my priorities? What do I really want to go after? I’m going to put together a list of BIG. Thank you for the inspiring words, music, and photography.
August 6th, 2009 @ 1:45 am
So far I love the new look! I gotta run now, but will return!!!
August 6th, 2009 @ 2:25 am
I have been love love loving all you delurkers. So many blogs I’ve never visited. Thanks for saying hi!
August 6th, 2009 @ 4:28 am
Not a new delurker.
Love, love your site. You are an inspiration.
Time to make my August list….
August 6th, 2009 @ 8:39 am
I know what I’m up to. every. day.
Finishing my communication design diploma project I’ve been working on for the last six months. I want it to be finished. It will be finished.
August 6th, 2009 @ 12:37 pm
delurking! love reading your blog, love your written voice, moves me every time.
August. More living out a dream… floating about in a 27 ft airstream trailer… at the moment in the eastern part of canada, perched on the ocean, where i walk, and gather up sea treasures every day.
No secret compartments in the heart to unfold, they are all being lived…. well maybe one secret dream to somehow find a way to trail another little trailer behind us that would be my studio!
August 6th, 2009 @ 1:26 pm
I am delurking as well. My goal for August is to try to enjoy and cherish my newborn son – I’m so worn out from breastfeeding, etc, but want to push through this rough patch and recognize that each day for him is unique and precious. Good luck on the writing!
August 6th, 2009 @ 2:31 pm
I know, I am late again. Love the new digs.
August. Well, I will be finishing up my Master’s degree within the week, and handing the whole thing in. I have learned how to scan the contents of my appendices into Word, and have to finish scanning more than a few more and then I have a couple of forms to deal with…copy….hand it in….DONE!
I am making a new Notebook, I have started, but got side tracked by beginning a new poetry notebook. I am re-reading old notebooks and pulling all of the poems out and writing them in the poetry notebook. It has been really fun re-reading old entries, kind of like you mentioned. Can’t wait to finish up the notebook so I can start writing again.
I have a stack of books to read, and a list of more as well. My book club is next Thursday so I need to start that book (Shanghai Girls, Lisa See) TODAY. I haven’t read one novel this summer, so I need to catch up with that.
I also would like to clean the basement. We are going to buy a deep freeze before it freezes here and I need to figure out a place where it will live, and the basement is BAD. It needs attention.
I will continue running, begin jumping rope, and possibly go back on the Weight Watchers plan, because I seem to need accountability.
Thanks for the opportunity to make some good goals….good luck on yours, I can’t wait to read your books!
August 6th, 2009 @ 2:40 pm
You are one of the most inspirational people I know. You blow me away. Honestly. One of those: I don’t know how she does it all people
After my own heart!!

I’ve read your blog for a while now…not sure if I’ve left a comment before. I love your writing, love the way you find beauty in the ordinary moments. Thanks for the challenge of doing my dream every day for a month. I’m off to begin it…
August 8th, 2009 @ 1:42 am
OK, I’ll delurk. I’ve been following your blog for a while now. We live in Australia and I have a little boy a bit younger than Bean. I love the way you write, and how you capture your everyday. I’m always super excited when I see you’ve updated!
August 8th, 2009 @ 6:47 pm
Delurking, my dear.
I plan to find a job in August. That was my plan for months March through July as well. One of these days . . . unemployment has hit all over. Husband and I both lost our jobs within a week of each other.
I also plan to relish the time I have with my girls while I am unemployed. Making hay while the sun shines and the silver lining and all that.
Love reading your blog. Love your words, your art, your photos of your boys.
Sufficiently delurked?
