Around here today
Posted on | March 22, 2010 | 11 Comments
I felt like sharing a few photos of everyday things today.
Some tunes I’ve been liking.
A new place I’ve been collecting the things that catch my eye.
Also really enjoying some of the new self portraits up in the Self Portrait Sunday Flickr pool~grab your camera and join in (you know you want to.)
And: we took Bean ice skating today–and it was, well, sort of a disaster. Like a wet noodle on ice. Maybe it’s not his thing? Any suggestions (we did that push-thingy, it didn’t help much.)
Finally: what music have you been listening to this month?

I’ve been enjoying Mute Math on XM in the car. Today I randomly heard Cake and can’t get these lyrics out of my head:
“How do you afford your rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle? … Excess ain’t rebellion. You’re drinkin’ what they’re sellin’…”
As for the ice skating, I don’t know how much it’s like roller skating, but I teach first grade and we take a rollerskating field trip each year. We basically tell them to:
1) Stand up on the skates.
2) Bend your legs just a little.
3) Pick up each foot and put it down just like you were going to walk.
4) Little by little make bigger steps, and move your knees to keep your balance.
Sounds like your little guy is younger than my kids, but some of that may help a little.
Thanks for the beautiful pics, ideas, and inspiration.

I was listening to Buddy Holly in the car yesterday.
And, Skating? Well. FabuLeslie is right. The walking comes first: little steps, just to get balance. Jeff would get behind my kids and tell them not to move their feet so they could feel what gliding felt like, but he would hold them so they wouldn’t fall, or have to balance for that matter. We had our kids take lessons, being offspring of a hockey player. The first few years for Nicholas, there was A LOT of laying on the ice. Now, all he wants to do is skate and play hockey. Jeff even got tired of playing this weekend!

I held the Small Boys’ hands in mine and skated backwards before him; he was just three the first time I took him on the ice and there was much me holding him up by the armpits. He didn’t really learn to skate until we put him in hockey school starting at age 4 – at one hour once a week, it took him four months to move from crawling on all fours to skating. The second winter, when he started at the already skating level, he made a lot more progress. But he’s no Wayne Gretzky.
And four year olds in hockey gear? Deadly cute.

Hmmm, I’m trying to remember when I learned to ice skate. I know I learned to roller skate and then roller blade in my kitchen. If you have a comfortable space in your garage or basement, maybe he could work on gaining confidence on roller blades, then transition to ice skates at a rink?
Also, your photos are lovely. Thank you so much for sharing!

The Gypsy Kings seem to be finding there way in to my life with great regularity this month. I can’t identify why, but it appears to be their time.

Thank you for sharing the beautiful tunes you’ve been listening to, ahhhh i’ve realised how silent my life has become this week, with a husband on night shift and 2 sleeping babies, the silence has all of a sudden become eery and now listening to your music right now my body feels warm, my lips are smiling and my mind almost ready for bed – thank you!!

I’m taking intro to ice skating right now and I think ice skating’s one of those things that can’t be taught. Try your best to start him off on balance and let him do his thing. Eventually, it will come to him. Bend your legs a lot (it’s awkward but there’s little chance of falling) and if you’re going to fall, fall forward.
Music of the Month:
Raw Sugar – Metric
Hey, Soul Sister – Train
Leave Your Boyfriends – Leona Naess
Building and Mountains – The Republic Tigers
